Wairere Rams and Composites Clients' Success Stories |
Wairere rams have been sold throughout New Zealand. We have also sold live rams into Australia and the United Kingdom. And semen into Europe

|
The long history of breeding in tough, variable conditions is the reason why Wairere Rams thrive in a large range of environments. |
John Chittock, Gore
"Prior to managing this farm, I ran a sheep handling business, tailing 200,000 lambs and weighing up to 200,000 ewes a year. We saw a lot of different sheep bloodlines
and the Wairere sheep always stood out. When we took on the management of the
"Jeff Farm", lambing was below 100%. The introduction of Wairere rams has
given us a huge lift. We scanned 170% last year, but a cold wet spring really
knocked us back, to 127%. Despite the bad start to the season, we killed 4000 lambs off mum at 17 kg. We're pretty proud of what the Wairere stock are doing for us."
Stuart Percy, Wakatipu
"When we bought our first Wairere rams, to tell you the truth, we were running out of ram breeders to try. Prior to that, we would buy about 36 rams a year and half of them would die in their first season. It's wet, tough country we farm here. Anyway, the Wairere rams all survived that first year. We've been buying Wairere rams ever since."
Mike Williams, Banks Peninsula
"I used to breed my own Romdales but 120% was the best they ever did. In 2004 our Wairere 1/4 EF and Multiplier ewes did 152% from ewes mated to lambs tailed, with the lambs killing out at 16.5 to 17kg. The hoggets weaned 91% on our Banks Peninsula broken hill country."
Derrick Millton, Marlborough/Canterbury
"Production on our Ashley Gorge property has gone up in leaps and bounds in nine years of using Wairere Romneys. Your rams are so different from the sheep they call Romneys in Canterbury." Derrick has used Romney rams on the Canterbury property for seventeen years. Lambing % has climbed to around 150% and the lambs finish fast to good weights. These results encouraged Derrick to try Romneys over the Corriedale flock at Waipapa. In 2002 the Romney Corriedale ewes lambed 142% and the remaining Corriedales 124%. He is also able to lamb the first cross ewe hoggets.
Steve Gallagher, South Canterbury
In 1999 Steve put a quarter EF through the 2,700 ewes on his 500ha property. Last year he lambed 165% survival to sale with an average lamb price of $71.40 (This did include some ewe lambs sold for breeding in early July.) He normally gets 80% of the hoggets in lamb and around 115% docked to those that conceive, mated for one month. He selects rams bred from Wairere ewe hoggets, with emphasis on a good back end and strong constitution. Steve admitted that he wasn't proud of his grazing management so 'the sheep performance had to be genetics rather than management'.
Lyndon Munro, Marlborough
"My flock mix is ¼ East Friesian, 3/8 Romney, 3/8 Texel. We calculate we have 77% more weight of lamb to sell than we used to have with the Corriedales".
Colin Lawrence, Masterton
"Our lambing percentage has increased from 115-120% to 144% with an average weaning weight of 29.1 kg at 95 days. We've achieved that through the use of superior
genetics. Crossbreeding with the half East Friesian half Romney has given us a huge
boost in growth rates and milking ability. Our surplus ewes and our store lambs
are sought after by repeat buyers - it's obviously the Wairere genetics they want."
Derek Neal, Masterton
(Wairarapa Hill Country Farmer of the Year, 1998)
"We run 5400 ewes and 850 bulls on medium to steep hills, with only 12% flat. I've trialled various combinations of exotic breeds, but the Wairere Romney has proved it can take the pressure and still perform. We've steadily increased our percentage, to 146% this year, with lambs generally sold at 16-17 kg carcase weight."
John Langdon, Masterton
(Wairarapa Hill Country Farmer of the Year, 1991)
"We farm at Tinui. We've used Wairere bloodlines for about 25 years and the benefits are really coming through. We've steadily lifted our percentage from 110 % in 1992, to 147 % last year. We really test the ewes at tupping time, putting the Romney rams out for only 16 days, then following up with a blackface for 14 days. We would only get 200-300 blackface lambs from around 5000 ewes - over 85% of the ewes take the ram in the first cycle."
